Hello!
We are evaluating right now the Annotation tool and have found out that the Java library has only support for PDF.
As far as I can read in your web, it has support for any kind of Microsoft Office Documents (even the Java library), so I was wondering whether this is a limitation of the evaluation copy or the Java library.

Basically the GroupDocs.Annotation should support a lot of formats of documents for annotating , the .doc files are supported as well. You can check our features for this library
here.
But if you got any issues with annotating .doc files , then please specify them.

This is the error we get when we upload any docx or doc.
Maybe it is a limitation of the evaluation version or we have something misconfigured.

Yes you are right , at this moment our GroupDocs.Annotation for Java can't import the annotations from the .doc and .docx files also can't export them to these formats. We have discussed with our product team this feature and we will try to add it in our next release of the GroupDocs.Annotation for Java. Also we have created a ticket in our system (ANNOTATIONJAVA-851).
When the library with this feature will be released you will be notified.
