How do reduce memory consumption when working with large images

I convert different large images to A4 PDF with .NET application. I noticed that If I resize the image, to A4 format, before the conversion, the memory consumption is significantly reduced. Are there any suggestion how to prepare the image for best performance and lowest memory consumption? What image format you suggest? Jpeg? Png? Is it better to compress them or not?
