Questions about GroupDocs Viewer for Education

Hi,

I am building an educational testing website and may need the use of your
services. In this website, the teacher would attach a test (word, pdf) to
an answer key form. When the students go to take the test, they should be
able to ‘view’ the test that the teacher attached on the web browser,
instead of having to download it. This is where I would need your
companies services (so student’s can view the test file on the broswer
instead of downloading it).

I had a few quick questions;

  1. When the students are ‘viewing’ the test document on the web-browser I
want it so that that they can NOT download or copy the text from the
document. Does your services provide a ‘view only’ mode where the student
wouldn’t be able to interact or download the assignment.

  2. Some of your pricing plans are based on the # of documents. Is this
the number of documents or the number of views? For example, a teacher
attaches one document ( so that is one document ) but then there are 90
kids that take that test so there are 90 views. I see that you have a
‘document limit’ and a ‘viewer’ limitation. I would assume that the
document limit is the number of total documents on my site from all my
teachers? The ‘viewer’ is the number of times EACH document can be viewed,
or the number of times ALL the documents can be viewed?

Please let me know,
Thanks,
Ash

Hi Ash,

Thank forgetting in touch!

I'll answer your questions below:

1) We currently support limiting PDF download / print and also copying of text from within the displayed document. It's still possible to use print screen in an attempt to bypass this however, really depends on level of supervision to be honest? We're working on a watermark tool which would allow you to embed the users ID / email address into the viewed images so it would be very easy to see where documents originate if someone goes to the trouble of doing something like this, that functionality will be rolled out in another few weeks.

2) Typically if you are going to be embedding the functionality within a custom app you would need to purchase one of our API plans, in this case only document actions are recorded, document numbers are not relevant. Document limit is an individual file size limitation which relates to the maximum size that 1 document can be (20 MB depending on the plan). Typically with one of the API plans, the limitations are shared across your account so your users would be unaware. Once a document is configured for viewing this counts as one credit, potentially you could also use GroupDocs Assembly to allow students to fill out a questionnaire which results in actual documents with test questions and answers assembled and have them saved back to an account, which could then be downloaded from your system.

We also have a very good embeddable annotation product which would allow teachers to mark up these resultant documents, food for thought!

Ideally it would be great if you could give us either a phone number or a Skype username, and one of our business team can chat further with you about the possible pricing options and also technical possibilities that are open to you?

Best regards,
The Vipin Thomas, GroupDocs Support Team

disable. *We're working on a watermark tool which would allow you to embed

Hi Ash,

Apologies for the confusion, I'm actually based in the UK, our parent company is based in Australia. So the time that works best for a call is as early as possible (9-11 AM Toronto time)

1. "I understand that they can't download the file or copy text but could a student right click the document and then select 'save as' an image?"

We can add functionality to disable right click functionality within the browser to stop save as image behaviour, a user could still probably just save the webpage however and they may get the current image that way, it's something that I'll get the dev team to investigate further tomorrow

2. "*Please define document actions"

Any action on a document (Assembly, Signature, Convert, View, Compare, Annotate).

3. "In my case, teachers would be uploading a document, and many students would be later viewing that document - that is all. In a case like that, that would that count as 1 document from what I am reading?"

Correct, there are some limits on the number of free views allowed for each plan however, but once each document is converted for viewing this counts as 1 action.

Please let me know if you have any other questions

Best regards,

Derek
