Browsers have limited capabilities for working with PDF files, and displaying annotations is one of the features that may be restricted or not supported at all. In many cases, displaying annotations in PDF files requires specialized software or plugins.
Limitations
Google Chrome: The built-in PDF viewer in Chrome supports basic annotations such as text highlighting, underline, and bookmarks. However, the functionality is limited, and more advanced types of annotations like comments may not be available.
Mozilla Firefox: The built-in PDF viewer in Firefox also supports basic annotations like text highlighting and underline. However, the annotation support may be limited depending on the browser version and installed plugins.
Microsoft Edge: The built-in PDF viewer in Edge provides support for basic annotations like text highlighting and underline. Similar to other browsers, the full annotation support may be limited.

Plugin examples

  1. Kami (formerly known as Notable PDF): Kami provides advanced capabilities for working with PDF files, including support for various types of annotations such as comments, highlighting, underlining, drawing, and more. It also allows for collaborative work on documents, comment exchange, and real-time changes.
  2. PDF Viewer: This plugin replaces the default PDF viewer in Chrome and provides enhanced features. It supports various types of annotations, including comments, highlighting, underlining, and more. PDF Viewer also offers some advanced features such as display customization, document search, and bookmarking.
  3. Foxit PDF Reader: Foxit offers a plugin for Chrome that replaces the built-in PDF viewer and provides a broader range of features. It supports various types of annotations, including comments, highlighting, underlining, and more. Foxit PDF Reader also provides compatibility with cloud storage services such as Dropbox and Google Drive.

Please note that annotation support may vary depending on the plugin, browser version, and operating system. It is recommended to install and test multiple plugins to determine which one best suits your needs and expectations.
